Build complex itineraries with a unique map interface

By: Chloe Krawczyk

There’s a 7’x5’ paper map hanging on my wall where I draw circles around all the places in the world I want to visit. Kiwi.com is using our web API to recreate this experience on a digital map, making it more interactive and efficient to compare flights.

One of the most cumbersome aspects of booking flights is searching multiple destinations at once. Rather than have ten tabs open, Kiwi.com users can input the origins and destinations they’d like to explore and view every trip combination on a map. As you scroll, the map updates to show each connection, including nearby airports and their prices:

Mapbox GL is rendering the map client-side at 60 frames-per-second, the speed of a video game. The map and data overlays instantly update as Kiwi.com’s algorithms crunch complex user queries. Zooming, panning, and filtering results remain seamless.

The hierarchy of information is controlled at each zoom level so only the necessary contextual information is displayed. This brings Kiwi.com’s data front and center. Custom-styled features like price icons, flight paths, and regional boundaries also help users quickly interpret a lot of info.

Using expandable, draggable polygons, you can adjust the search radius of each destination without typing new search terms. This comes in handy if you’re exploring a large metropolitan area or even multiple countries; you can search hundreds of airports with a single click.

Use our suite of APIs and SDKs to create custom map experiences for travel that address your users’ pain points and let your algorithms shine. Have questions? Reach out to our consumer sales team.
