Square’s New Map Looks Great on Receipts
By: Scott Pietka & Madison Draper
Square helps businesses run their commerce and stay connected with their customers. One component of Square’s offer is merchant receipts, which include information on a business’s location through a simple, contextual map. While static receipt images can be an easy afterthought, they can also be an important expression of the brand and business location.
This month, Square refreshed its receipt maps with a new style. With the help of Mapbox Studio and the Static Images API, they built a custom style focused on making local businesses stand out, improving street label clarity, and adding translations for global businesses.
On brand
Square empowers small businesses to localize and connect with their customers. The new map’s minimalist style makes the local business’s location stand out, using color to highlight important features like motorways and street names while muting distracting features like highway shields, road arrows, and building footprints.
Square’s geometric typeface is a distinguishing aspect of their brand. Square kept a cohesive look on their receipts from top to bottom, using custom fonts in Mapbox Studio.
Supporting businesses around the world
Mapbox’s localization feature allows Square’s merchants to display their local language on a receipt, which is critical to supporting global customers.
Secure, geotagged payments
With a map displaying a customer’s purchase in each receipt, users can see where they shopped. Customers receiving a receipt powered by Square can reference maps to recall great coffee shops they visited or quickly recognize fraudulent charges.
Next time you buy from a local business, check your receipt for a custom map of the transaction location. Are you interested in adding a simple but a custom map to your receipt or other email communication? Check out the Mapbox Static Images API and start building today.
