US truck drivers log over 140 billion miles per year. When you’re making thousands of deliveries a week, missing one delivery a day might not seem like much, but it contributes to thousands of dollars in lost revenue. Efficiency is key for delivery systems, and that’s why Optym leverages Mapbox for their Less-than-truckload (LTL) solution, RouteMAX, allowing them to optimize 40,000+ LTL deliveries per day.

Optym’s optimization engine incorporates drivers’ hours of service requirements, vehicle capabilities, and loading/unloading dwell times. By leveraging Mapbox’s traffic-aware ETAs, RouteMAX intelligently sequences deliveries, updates them in real-time based on changes in traffic and incidents, and keeps fleet managers informed of any delivery exceptions.

“Integrating Mapbox’s services was simple and customizable as per our product needs. RouteMAX leverages the Mapbox routing APIs to plot optimal routes created by our route optimization engine [on the map]. Furthermore, rich features like drawing tools, Geocoding, and eye-candy animations help position RouteMAX as a feature-rich, intuitive and user-friendly SaaS product for the trucking industry.” — Rambabu Yadlapalli, Senior Principal Software Engineer @ Optym
“Maps and map-based workflows are very important features in RouteMAX. Mapbox has made it possible for us to provide a very fluid map-based visualization of shipments in both plain map and satellite views. Mapbox provides a very intuitive way for our users to consume results of our route optimization and make necessary changes, as required.” — Bharath Narayanan, Senior Product Analyst @ Optym

Optym designed a custom Mapbox GL JS map style to show managers and drivers the right information at the right time, and lets fleet managers edit routes and pickup/drop-off locations directly on the map.

Delivery efficiency hinges on getting drivers directly to the doorstep. Commercial delivery locations are often at the back of buildings or completely separate from the retail access and street addresses. Finding the right location to make the drop off can add costly minutes to a route, setting up for missed deliveries. RouteMAX’s users can choose the exact delivery location on a map using Mapbox Satellite to lower the likelihood of wasted time and bad deliveries.
