Usually, when we say “small screen” at Mapbox, we’re talking about a phone or watch app. But this week we’re excited to congratulate the teams at VICE News Tonight and Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj for their Emmy award recognition for boundary-pushing journalism.
VICE News Tonight received 19 Emmy nominations for stories like Walking to America with the Migrant Caravan which is nominated for Outstanding Feature Story in Spanish, Outstanding Video Journalism News and Outstanding Editing: News, and Zero Tolerance: One immigrant family’s journey from separation to reunification, nominated for Outstanding Feature Story in a Newscast and Outstanding Editing: News.
Their maps match the minimalist aesthetic of the reporting, providing crucial, beautiful context.
Netflix’s Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj has already won an Emmy for Outstanding Motion Graphics.
In the past year, their team produced four cycles of the show which include gorgeous, dynamic, full-screen visualizations, which are (almost) as big as Hasan’s personality, to compliment reporting on topics from Amazon deforestation to Oil spills in the US.
Check out the Emmys on Saturday, or watch the full episodes of these shows to see how they use maps to enhance their storytelling. News and Documentary Emmy Awards will be presented next Tuesday, September 24th, and streamed live on Twitter.
