Dynamic maps in Unity that react to gameplay

By: Abhishek Tripathi

With the latest release of †, every component of the map can react to gameplay, data, or user interaction—at runtime.

This level of customizability offers infinite possibilities for going beyond a static world: Switch between different themes based on game levels, change building materials with player interaction, turn layers on or off for better visualization, and more. Developers have total control over the map’s look and feel, and players’ interactions with it.

Map with changing imagery. This change could be triggered based on a gameplay mechanic.

With dynamic maps, the map becomes a medium of visualization or expression. It’s part of the experience rather than a static object. Dynamic maps allow for data or event-driven worlds, each reusing the same world instead of creating multiple static worlds.

Getting started with dynamic maps is simple. We added comprehensive APIs to allow you to change map elements at runtime. In the Editor, the map reacts to all UI changes, allowing you to quickly visualize what you will see at runtime.

Use filters at runtime to change which data is visualized on the map. Here, filtering buildings by height.

The team at Big Red Button are excited to try runtime editing of maps.

“We are pleased to be working with Mapbox on their real time mapping solutions for mobile geolocation gaming. The recent addition of runtime editing of map styles and map textures has allowed us to create dynamic maps in a way that hasn’t been possible for us before. Our designers and artists are incredibly excited about the dynamic worlds we can now create for players.”
