Students apply GIS skills to solve real-world problems
In anticipation of GIS Day, Indiana University is celebrating the exciting work the community is doing with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Together with our partner, The City of Bloomington, we’re launching the Open Data Challenge, leveraging the wealth of data made available on Bloomington’s open data portal.
In this contest, students hone GIS skills and use data to solve real needs for the city. Registered students of Indiana University or any other university are eligible to submit maps, tools, and solutions for two challenges the City of Bloomington has identified:
Challenge 1: Vision Zero in Bloomington
Using open data, visualize crash locations in Bloomington showing additional details such as type of road user, cause, and traffic volume at that location.
Challenge 2: Mapping Volunteering Opportunities
Help City of Bloomington Volunteer Network connect people to volunteer opportunities by creating a web map showing the locations of service organizations in the community.
Excited to test your skills?
If you’re a registered student, sign up and get started. The submission period for the contest is 11/8–12/13.
