A mobile map with all the data for finding the perfect spot
Anyone who has been fishing knows that walking off a boat empty handed is disappointing, and wouldn’t likely inspire a return trip. Swedish company Fishbrain is guiding anglers to catch more fish — and enjoy a lifetime hobby — through geolocation intelligence.
In the Fishbrain app, built with Mapbox’s Android and iOS SDKs, free and premium users can track the hottest fishing spots in nearby waters, visualize a wealth of relevant data for choosing a good spot to drop a line, and connect with other anglers to show off their latest catches. Users can even get proactive alerts when fish are caught in their local area.
Fishing is all about location, which is why the map is such an essential component of the Fishbrain app. Navigation between Satellite, Terrain, and Hybrid styles is quick and intuitive. With the click of a button, you can filter data layers like recent nearby catches (indicated by custom branded markers), or recommended baits, the local weather forecast, and even species that are most likely to be in the local waters. Premium users have the added benefit of viewing bathymetry, i.e. water depth data, within the map style.
One of the advantages Mapbox provides is the ability to customize data layers and incorporate complex data sets into your map — like bathymetry for example — as opposed to just adding information to a static basemap. This isn’t possible with other mapping platforms, and Fishbrain’s uniquely branded, yet cleverly detailed map is a great example of what can be achieved when the design limitations are lifted.
