We all know what it feels like to be hangry, that grumbling feeling where hunger and anger meet. A full day outside or a meeting that runs through the lunch hour can get you to this place pretty quickly. It’s at a moments like these when we can be grateful we live in a world where we can grab our phones and open DoorDash, an on-demand restaurant delivery service app, to bring food right to our doors.
DoorDash recently upgraded and started using Mapbox iOS and Android SDKs to build two different custom apps. The first app is for their “Dashers” - those all-important people who make food magically appear on your doorstep. The second is for hungry customers to track the status of their food obsessively.
Once an order is placed, the only thing standing between a user and a delicious plate of Pad Thai is the Dasher’s commute. Thus, an accurate and straightforward mapping tool is critical. When an order request is made, a Dasher is assigned and receives a restaurant destination to pick up the food and the home address to drop it off. The Dasher sees a map of the route as well as the most efficient directions route at that time of day, using the Directions API for accurate ETA’s.
The consumer-facing app is similarly important for keeping hungry and impatient customers happy. Using the SDKs, DoorDash includes a map with a custom Dasher icon that lets customers track their meal. For example, a user can watch a Dasher begin their journey, dodge DC weekend traffic around the White House with a more efficient route, and then approach the user’s house.
