We’ve added automatic source compositing to Mapbox Studio for improved label placement. Compositing lets you to choose to prevent overlapping labels from rendering, resulting in more legible and clean maps:

Our map renderer performs label placement calculations once per tileset source. The renderer then combines all the sources together to generate the final style. Here’s how label collision detection works for a non composited source:

By compositing, the renderer will detect label collisions across more than one tileset, because all the tilesets are part of the same source:

All new styles will now start with compositing turned on, and you can turn on source compositing for an existing style from the debug panel.

Stay tuned for more updates, and send your latest map creations to gallery@mapbox.com to have them considered for our gallery.
