The iD editor is the easiest way to get started with OpenStreetMap. But there may come a time when more power and precision is needed – our mapping team uses the Java OpenStreetMap (JOSM) editor every day. Here is your guide to take your mapping skills to the next level.

Getting Started

The JOSM editor runs directly on your computer, not in the browser like iD. You will need to install the latest version of JOSM. Make sure you have the Java Runtime setup in your environment.

Editing with JOSM

When you load JOSM, you’ll see the latest news on JOSM. First step is to download the area you want to map. Click the download button in the upper left. Adjust the slippy map to choose a place for editing, draw a box around the specific area, and press the “Download” button at the bottom.

Next, load satellite imagery to assist with identifying objects on the ground. Select “Imagery” from the menu bar and choose “Bing Aerial Imagery".

Depending on the area you selected, there may be existing data to modify, or blank space for new edits. If data is already present, you can help improve accuracy. For example, a misaligned road can be adjusted, using the “Select” tool.

If you find missing data, such as a road or a point of interest, add it using the “Draw” tool.

Uploading your data

Once you are finished mapping, save your data to OpenStreetMap using the “Upload” button. Add a relevant comment and an appropriate source. If this is your first upload, you would be asked to enter your OpenStreetMap account details. Save the authentication details for future uploads.

JOSM validates your data before upload, and provides you with warning and error messages to keep your data clean. Make sure to fix the issues, before confirming your upload.

Happy mapping!
