Three days ago, Mumbai’s largest landfill located in the east caught fire, choking the air with toxic fumes. It took two days for the fire to be brought under control, by which time the city’s residents had endured respiratory difficulties that forced the closure of over 70 public schools.

The event was captured by NASA’s Landsat 8 satellite as it passed over Mumbai a few hours after the fire broke out.
