I just mapped NOAA GFS precipitable water data, using a video directly in the map. This is part of the new Mapbox GL JS, and the same technique I used to visualize Hurricane Patricia forming, then transforming from a category 5 hurricane to tropical depression as it hit the coast 10 days ago.
3-hour interval GFS model composite of precipitable water in the atmosphere, October 15-28.
Animated weather data unearths complex and beautiful patterns in our atmosphere: the subtle daily rhythm of pulsing evapotranspiration over rainforests, eddying atmospheric rivers hurtling moisture away from equatorial regions, and the violent vortices of hurricanes forming, strengthening, and dissipating.
Tom has a great how-to post on adding video to a map if you want to try it out.
