July’s edition of the GeoDC meetup is all about open location data: addresses, traffic, and demography. Come check out the talks and mingle with DC’s liveliest geo crowd this Wednesday, July 8 at 7:00pm ET on the first floor of Stetson’s at 1610 U Street NW.

I’ll be showing off the OpenAddresses project, which aims to make global address data easy to use and freely available. Contributors include open data evangelists and private companies, who’ve collectively gathered more than 130 million addresses. Their work is important because address data is an essential ingredient for geocoding. Until recently, address data was usually closed, making geocoding expensive and legally complicated.

We’ll also hear from the team behind the Census Bureau’s City SDK and Kevin Webb of Conveyal, who’ll discuss how the OpenTraffic project is collecting global traffic speed data.
