A moisture-laden atmospheric river is aimed at the Pacific Coast and is slated to bring up to 6 inches of rain to parts of the San Francisco Bay Area. This will be our first rain since December, and while it won't end the drought, it should bring much needed moisture to the region.

This map shows total predicted Precipitable Water in the Atmosphere for mid-day Friday. I vectorized data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) 0.25 degree Global Forecast System (GFS) with makesurface, cut it into tiles using our tippecanoe library, and styled it in Studio.

The patterns in weather data are fascinating and useful. Hit me or Ian V. up on twitter to talk about tools and maps for weather data.
