Mapping wind gusts

A ridge of high pressure moves north along the eastern seaboard of North America. Along the front’s leading edge, wind gusts approach 35mph.

To make this map, I downloaded High Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) Wind Gust speed data from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This 3km resolution dataset contains real-time weather data for mid North America.

Source DataEven the raw source data is fascinating

I converted this HRRR wind gust to vectors using makesurface, a tool that we’ve been building to vectorize raster datasets. I used Studio to apply a moody color scheme and publish to Mapbox.com.
