Tropical storm Bansi, as it appeared last night, pulling warm water from rainforests of Madagascar, (full map live on Mapbox)

Earlier this week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) doubled the spatial resolution of it’s Global Forecast System (GFS). Damon loaded the newly available 13km resolution data into Mapbox Studio to visualize the total perceptible water - or the amount of water in the atmosphere.

This is just the start to radically improved open weather data for everyone. NOAA also just announced significant investment in next generation of supercomputers:

By October 2015, the capacity of each of NOAA’s two operational supercomputers will jump to 2.5 petaflops, for a total of 5 petaflops – a nearly tenfold increase from the current capacity.
