2014 Berlin in High-Res
We just updated Berlin, Germany in Mapbox Satellite with a fresh set of high-resolution orthoimagery captured earlier this year. The 20 cm imagery was taken during the winter months of 2014, providing leaf-off clarity for excellent traceability. Thanks to Geoportal Berlin for making this data open and available to the public.
At the northern end of Berlin's Museum Island, the dome top of the Bode Museum can be seen. The Pergamon Museum is just to the south, showing two red cranes that are working on rennovations. The island sits in the middle of the Spree River, and is home to five of Berlin's museums.
Despite being several hundred kilometers inland from the North Sea, Berlin has an active maritime port. The containers in this image are queued for transport on the Spree River, which eventually connects with the Elbe River, terminating at the North Sea.
Berlin's Victory Column stands 65 meters (215 feet) tall in the middle of the Great Star, or Großer Stern, intersection. The statue was built in 1873 to symbolize the Prussian victory at the end of the Danish-Prussian war.
The Spandau Citadel was constructed during the latter half of the 16th century. This fortress served to protect the small town of Spandau, which is now a borough of modern-day Berlin. This island citadel was built at the meeting place of the Spree and Havel rivers.
Berlin Hauptbahnhof, or Central Station, was built between the years 1995 and 2005, and opened for use in 2006. The train station was purposefully planned after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 as one of many efforts to reunite the city.
Crowds gather near Berlin's Strausberger Platz for an event that has closed the main boulevard, Karl Marx Alle. Festivals, parades, flea markets, and other outside events occur almost every weekend in Berlin.
