Logistics companies are seeing a surge in home deliveries during COVID-19 to levels more typical during the holiday shopping rush. Drivers are working harder and are under more difficult conditions — efficiency, safety, and a smooth driving experience matter more now than ever.

PackageRoute handles load balancing, route planning, and navigation for FedEx Ground service providers — independent operators who manage a fleet of drivers in a specific region. They’ve launched new maps and route optimization to improve their driver experience and efficiency, specifically:

  • Owners get an accurate sense of their driver and fleet metrics, including which routes are profitable and where costs need to be controlled.
  • Managers can monitor each driver’s progress and assist with any missed deliveries.
  • Drivers get more efficient routes, smooth turn-by-turn navigation, traffic avoidance, and ultimately a lower-stress, less time-consuming workday.

Pankaj Nauriyal, CEO and founder of PackageRoute, explained the return on investment for owners and drivers:

“At $20 per route per month, PackageRoute pays for itself within 10 stops. Given our requirements for highly customized, map-driven features, we see Mapbox as a foundational technology partner.”

With the Mapbox Optimization API and Navigation SDK, drivers on PackageRoute are delivering 3–5 more packages per hour, saving up to two hours in a 150 package shift. Since drivers are compensated per package or per stop, this means higher effective pay for drivers but decreased overall costs for owners.

PackageRoute also helps owners reduce turnover and driver stress by using technology to augment local knowledge. With fast, accurate maps and pre-planned, efficient routes, drivers can navigate unfamiliar neighborhoods with confidence, reducing the mental load of wayfinding.
