Myle, the ride-hailing app that covers New York City’s five boroughs with on-demand and scheduled rides, is helping transport patients, critical medical supplies, and healthcare professionals to and from medical facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ride-hailing app just launched in February and quickly gained popularity with New Yorkers by removing surge pricing and by charging, on average, ten percent less than other ride-hailing options. Then New York became the center of the pandemic in the United States, and Myle radically pivoted their business — expanding to support contactless deliveries and to provide a safe option to get patients and doctors to hospitals by outfitting cars and drivers with protective gear.
Optimizing for demand with Mapbox Traffic Data
Pre-scheduled rides account for more than 80% of Myle’s business from companies, cities, and governments. Each night at 8:00 pm, they receive around 12,000 routes to plan. Because all routes are pre-scheduled, it was critical to have accurate, real-time and historical traffic data so they can plan drivers routes, ETAs, costs, and update routes as they receive on-demand requests during the day.
Myle built their routing engine with OSRM and recently added Mapbox Traffic Data to improve their routes, ETAs, and cost models. By adding Mapbox Traffic Data, Myle now has access to a dataset of Typical speeds and Live speeds built from over 300 million miles daily. Mapbox Typical speeds provide expected traffic conditions throughout the week, and Mapbox Live speeds show those which have been observed in the last 15 minutes, allowing Myle to keep drivers on track even if weather or accidents impact their route.
“We have been using Mapbox for over four years, and it’s always been so reliable for us; moreover, it is improving on a daily basis. Our experience with Mapbox is marvelous, the tech is very simple & efficient and well documented. All of our sophisticated requirements can be realized using Mapbox’s map. The support team is always there to assist on any matter. The Traffic Data has greatly improved the efficiency of our ride-share operation, as current traffic data is very important. It allows us to provide correct ETAs for our customers, match rides with closest drivers, and routes our upcoming trips efficiently in a matter of seconds” — Vadim Makarenko, CTO, Myle Technologies.
