Mapbox product updates
Hey Builders,
We took a different approach to this issue of Product Updates. If you’re a fan, let us know by subscribing.
In product news: We released faster, better offline maps in our Maps SDKs for iOS and Android this month. Some operations, such as our map deletion and re-downloading which used to require up to 10 minutes can now be completed in seconds.
Upgrade to the latest version of the SDKs to get these improvements.
For offline maps inspiration, check out Suunto 7 smart sports watch, which runs on Google’s WearOS using Mapbox Maps SDK for Android.

Labels got rich, accessibility improvements from our dev community
Here’s some code showing new GL JS v1.6.0 features, including the ability to search arrays and strings, and to show rich text labels on your map.
- With inline images in text labels, you can add images rendered inline with your label text.
- With stretchable icons, you can use rules to stretch complex images like highway shields.
- With the in expression, you can search arrays and strings for values or substrings — and style on results.
COMMUNITY H/T
New features in v1.6.0 open up exciting design possibilities — including designing for accessibility. Special h/t to @dmytro-gokun, @aMoniker, and @andrewharvey for contributing to usability and accessibility features, and huge thanks to everyone for many code and issue contributions in this release.

Mapbox + Vision SDK everywhere at CES 2020
We spotted the Mapbox Vision SDK in four new products and demos at CES. We also saw the largest in-car maps ever, plus voice-controlled map styling, custom offline maps, and more. Here’s a recap:
- Samsung and Harman unveiled the Samsung Digital Cockpit 2020, a safety-centered auto experience featuring AR navigation, incident alerts, and driver safety tools powered by Mapbox — plus 5G-linked features inside and outside the vehicle.
- Raven Connected launched Raven+, introducing enhanced driver safety features for individuals and fleets — powered by the Vision SDK’s AR capabilities.
- DENSO demoed their Mobility IoT core product, which uses Vision SDK’s ability to detect road signs, vehicles, and more to power analytics on the edge in real-time.
- Luxoft’s HALO concept brings the digital experience that consumers expect at home into the vehicle — with LG Electronics, Amazon Alexa, and Mapbox. HALO is powered by webOS Auto which features the Vision SDK for AR Navigation.
TAKEAWAY
Connected vehicles are mobile devices. And just like every smart watch or phone, they are context-aware and users expect them to provide a seamless UX supporting drivers and riders. For navigation experience, AR is where reality hits the road.
