Safety first experience powered by multi-screen maps and AR navigation

Samsung’s eye-catching Digital Cockpit returned to CES this year, reimagined with driver safety features front and center, powered by Mapbox maps and navigation.

Digital Cockpit 2020 is the third co-development between Samsung Electronics and HARMAN International, and features AR navigation, incident alerts, and driver safety tools. The system uses 5G to link features inside and outside the vehicle, and includes eight interior displays.

The design focuses on enhancing safety according to an individual driver’s needs.

The Front Display provides visual navigation information positioned to make sure the driver keeps their eyes on the road. The Dashboard Display, seamlessly incorporated into the vehicle’s interior design, is positioned under the Front Display and delivers visual notices and safety alerts. Under the Center Information Display is the Console Display which the driver can use to control the map, AR navigation, as well as the vehicle itself.

Using the Mapbox Navigation SDK and Maps SDK for Android, the Samsung team was able to customize the maps to complement the digital cockpit design with the right fonts, colors, and labels to create a complimentary experience for both screens.

Conventional side mirrors are replaced with two displays from the external Camera Monitoring System. When a user is driving or parking, these can be used to alert the driver to possible risks on the rear lateral sides that wouldn’t otherwise be seen in a standard view.

Outside the vehicle, external tail lamps form a Tail Display, which is able to communicate to drivers behind them with statuses like “road work ahead” or “pedestrians approaching.”

The Digital Cockpit is an impressive representation of personalized, driver-focused in-car navigation, providing an engaging, interactive, and thoughtful experience for any user. If you are at CES, stop by booth #15006 to see it for yourself.
