Announcing Rapid Deploy

By: Brian Davidson

Working with government agencies, we know that human and financial resources are tight, yet mission requirements grow every day. That’s why we’re introducing Mapbox Rapid Deploy, a simple, low-lift way for anyone to build a situation awareness application — no coding or extra resources required.

Whether it is the military conducting operations abroad, first responders assisting in a natural disaster, or departments of transportation informing the public about road conditions, situational awareness is required to make decisions, inform the distribution of resources, and share information across teams and with the public. But many teams lack the dedicated resources necessary to build and maintain a complex situational awareness application.

This resource gap was evident during the California power shutoffs in October. In response to wildfire fears, California utilities decided to initiate public safety power shutoffs during periods of high winds. SoCal Edison provided static data to its customers that shows if their neighborhoods are in the blackout zones. But the information wasn’t easily accessible. In order to help California residents plan for these blackouts — LA Times journalists converted the SoCal Edison data into an interactive, searchable map. By updating this data frequently, citizens could quickly find out if they were in a blackout zone and plan accordingly.

Rapid Deploy is instantly deployable in connected environments via Mapbox.com or offline with Mapbox Atlas. This makes it the fastest way in any scenario to create situational awareness applications that are interactive, consumable, and immediately actionable.

It all starts with a few questions about use-case. After that configuration step, you get a mission-ready application ready for deployment. Once the application is running, users can then drag-and-drop data from common geospatial formats like shapefiles and geoJSON, draw and annotate on the map, and collaborate with their teammates and stakeholders.

Because we know that we cannot anticipate every scenario, we made the entire application open-source. Connect your own services and data or add custom functionality then instantly re-deploy.

Situational awareness is essential to nearly all missions in the public sector and we’re committed to supporting you. Try Rapid Deploy, request access to Atlas, or get in touch if you want to chat about your use-case.
