Maki meets Mean Girls

By: Madison Draper

It’s October 3rd, and while we’re all busy posting Aaron Samuels gifs to Twitter, I wanted to try something a little different — putting the Burn Book on the map.

Making a Burn Book icon

Rightfully infamous, the Burn Book is now a symbol on this map. To start, I went to the Maki Icon Editor and created a new set of icons using pink and black. I went for a black icon with a pink halo. Fetch and edgy.

I stacked fire-station-11 and library-15 on top of each other in Adobe Illustrator to design the icon, and I think it came out pretty “grool.” Be sure to export the icon itself as an SVG. If you run into any issues, check out our SVG troubleshoot guide.

Designing a pink map

Just like Regina George’s comebacks, there’s a lot of shades in this photo. I used a Chrome Extension color picker to find the hex value for Regina’s pink cardigan. Since she’s wearing the garment, there are a lot of different lightness values. Try to get a range of light colors to experiment with.

Using the Monochrome color style picker, I used the same pink hue but increased the saturation and lightness. A lighter shade seemed more true to their clothes (and their attitude) than a darker shade.

The map turned out this super fetch pink color, suitable for planning out all your Wednesday shopping outings, hot dates at the movies (don’t forget to add butter — it’s not a carb, right?), and determining what spots to avoid running into teachers.

Burn Book + pink map

The next step is to import the Burn Book icon into the map style. Drag and drop the icon into Mapbox Studio to upload it.

Once uploaded, you can click on any symbol layer, click on Icon and select the Burn Book icon to make appear on that feature. And that’s, like, it.

Share your remake of a Burn Book icon and some hot pink maps on Twitter using #BuiltWithMapbox. How many maps are you going to create? You can create an unlimited number of styles with Mapbox Studio; the limit literally does not exist. Make all the maps! You go, Glen Coco!
