Traffic-aware ETAs and directions now available in 161 countries and territories, and growing
By: Ben Levin
Our Directions API, Matrix API, and Navigation SDKs now include traffic coverage from 161 countries and territories, and it is growing every day.
Traffic patterns are different everywhere. But what’s consistent about traffic is that you can’t have smart directions, ETAs, or business intelligence without understanding where congestion is and when it occurs. Now, whether your users are in Fa’a’ā, Cape Town, Mumbai, or Detroit, you can provide traffic-aware turn-by-turn directions and ETAs all over the world, while building with the speed and customizability of Mapbox .
Our Global Traffic layer is more than red and green lines on a grid. It’s a living map. Each city has a unique traffic fingerprint, a different pulse growing and contracting daily. Compare a single day across Istanbul, Cape Town and Seattle:
Every month, over 400 million people touch our tools, providing over 7.5 billion miles of aggregated, anonymized, and privacy-filtered data that we feed right back into the map. Combined with data from external providers, open data sources, and crowdsourced feedback we’re able to calculate congestion, detect incidents, and traffic conditions around the world.
The coverage and accuracy of our traffic layer is growing rapidly. Quality and availability varies by and within countries, incorporating a mix of real-time data and historical trends depending on the volume of telemetry data locally.
Many companies are already building with our global traffic at scale, like Va De Taxi in Brazil.
“Mapbox has been the perfect partner to grow with us as we’ve scaled from tracking over 30,000 drivers a month to 120,000, across ride-hailing, corporate fleets, and more. With the addition of live-traffic, especially in Brazil, we’re able to provide accurate ETAs an increase engagement for both drivers and users. — Tatiana Vecchi , CEO, Va De Taxi, Brazil
Using traffic is easy: Through our Directions API, Matrix API, or Navigation SDK, traffic estimates are built into our native ETAs and turn-by-turn directions. If you have questions contact our team for help getting started.
