Hammerhead builds offline routing for cyclists with Mapbox

By: Matthew Whittemore

Offline routing gives customers the ability to request a new route or be rerouted in disconnected or semi-connected environments. It’s perfect for all kinds of applications, especially those that enable and encourage their users to get outside and explore. So when Hammerhead, the creators of cutting-edge bicycle computer, Karoo, saw our beta announcement in October, they jumped at the chance to implement offline routing.

Starting next year, offline routing in Karoo will allow cyclists of all levels to enjoy long road-biking journeys and explore mountain biking trails, all without needing to stay connected

Hammerhead worked closely with our Navigation and Directions teams, providing feedback and asking questions that helped us drive the beta of offline routing forward to production.

“Incorporating the new offline SDK into our code base went extremely well, and exceeded our expectations. The Mapbox team was always prompt and helpful, which made transitioning from our current navigation provider to the Mapbox offline routing service a seamless process.” — Brian Oberholtzer, VP of Software, Hammerhead

Stray off-course? Miss a turn? Decide to stop at your favorite secluded cafe? With offline routing, you’ll be able to navigate back to your original route.

“Having the offline SDK integrated on Karoo enables a variety of off-route and destination change use-cases while riders are on the road without an internet connection. Highly impactful features such as better routing preferences and optimizations, navigating to points offline, rerouting, changing routes, or loading up offline points of interests are all easily within our grasp now.” — Brian Oberholtzer, VP of Software, Hammerhead

Offline routing will be available on Karoo in the new year, allowing cyclists of all levels to enjoy long road-biking journeys and explore mountain-biking trails, all without needing to stay connected.

If you’re ready to build offline, offline routing is now available to commercial and enterprise customers. Take a look at our docs for Android and iOS or get in touch with our team to get started. If you’re a Pay-as-you-go customer, point your bounding box to the Faroe Islands for a free preview!
