Vision Zero is San Francisco’s policy commitment to eliminate all traffic-related fatalities by 2024. Over 200 people annually are severely injured or killed in traffic collisions on San Francisco streets. The reality is certain locations are more dangerous than others, and awareness is a big piece of the puzzle, especially in a city that sees many tourists who may lack local knowledge.
We wanted to see if AR could be used to contextualize real-word problems like public health, safety, and awareness. Using Vision Zero pedestrian safety data, we built an experimental app with ARKit + Mapbox that drops AR info banners into intersections historically prone to traffic related injuries.
We tied in real world GPS tags to each intersection with the ARkit library we just released. When a city goer reaches one of those tags, a push notification gives them a heads up before they approach an intersection that is potentially more dangerous based on historical data.
Feel free to experiment with the app, or import your own data by downloading the Xcode project and browsing the README and inline comments. Let us know what you build on Twitter with the tag #BuiltwithMapbox.
