We’ve just released a new library that makes it easier to add location based content to ARKit applications built in Unity.

While the Unity ARKit asset has made it easy to develop AR applications with Unity, the ability to connect the data available on the Mapbox platform, especially maps and points of interests, can make AR experiences richer in content and more compelling overall.

This library aims to inform ARKit of global positioning using location data from the phone, which allows Unity developers to “anchor” augmented reality experiences to real world coordinates. Given the sheer volume of data available with Mapbox, the possibilities are endless. You can discover and navigate to interesting places in a new city or even pass through a portal into a different dimension.

We’ll continue to expand the library as we explore what’s possible when combining our Unity SDK with ARKit. Next up is a feature that helps the ARKit scene align itself to true north, which is important for accurately placing annotations. Learn more about what you can do with location data in Unity here, and get excited because there’s much more to come.

If you’re developing AR applications outside of Unity, be sure to check out our new Mapbox iOS + ARKit library. Show off your AR creations by tweeting @mapbox with the tag #BuiltWithMapbox.
