The team at Mapbox has been inventing mapping software for more than eight years. In February of 2011, we announced TileMill, our first map editor. Then in 2014, Young introduced Mapbox Studio Classic. And in late 2015, we introduced Mapbox Studio - a new level of usability and power in map editing.
We still love TileMill and all our vintage creations, but to build the future we’re focusing on the future. On January 31st, 2017, we’re ending support for several legacy products:
TileMill
TileMill has moved to a new community-driven organization: tilemill-project
on GitHub. We’re granting commit rights to interested contributors and hope for a long life in community-driven mode.
Since TileMill is a desktop application, this doesn’t change anything for existing users, and the application will still be downloadable.
Mapbox Geocoding API v3
On January 31st, the v3 endpoint of our Geocoding API will be discontinued, returning 410 Gone for all requests.
Luckily, it’s very unlikely you’re still using v3.
If you’re using Mapbox.js, check that the version of Mapbox.js is 2.0.0 or newer. If it’s lower than 2.0.0, upgrade to the latest version, which is currently 2.4.0, and you’re good to go.
If you’re using the Geocoding API directly, without Mapbox.js, check out the Geocoding API documentation for information about the current version.
Mapbox.com/editor
On January 31st, the legacy map editor interface at /editor
will redirect to Mapbox Studio, our latest map editing interface, which includes both style editing and powerful data editing tools.
If you’ve created projects with the /editor
interface, they’ll become read-only on January 31st. They’ll stay online and accessible, and you can download the data you’ve added to them at any time as GeoJSON or KML from the Mapbox Studio Classic Projects interface.
Pardon the dust
We’re focusing on Mapbox Studio and a wide range of successful APIs that are empowering developers to build next-generation applications. Change is hard, but we want to build the best, easiest-to-use, and most powerful software possible for the lovely people who use Mapbox.
